Gustavus Alaska Gustavus lies amidst some of the most remarkable and
splendid scenery and pristine wilderness areas left in the world. Gustavus’ Icy
Straits and surrounding wilderness maintains a diversified and fantastic array
of Alaskan wildlife. A colorful Alaskan history and fascinating geological past
are part of the magic of the community of Gustavus. Literally surrounded by
mountains, Gustavus is also the gateway to Glacier Bay National Park. You must
first arrive in lovely little community of Gustavus in Southeast Alaska. The
entrance to the park along with the Glacier Bay Ranger Station headquarters and
official Glacier Bay Lodge is located only 8 miles from Gustavus in
Bartlett Cove. The charming little town of Gustavus Alaska has less than 400
year round residents, but sees many thousands of tourists over the summer
months.

Glacier Bay National park, southeastern Alaska.
Located on the Gulf of Alaska, it was proclaimed a national monument in 1925 and
renamed in 1980. It covers 3,225,284 acres. It includes Glacier Bay, the
northwestern slope of Mount Fairweather, and the U.S. portion of the Alsek
River. Among the notable features of the park are great tidewater glaciers, one
of which, Muir Glacier, rises 265 ft (81 m) above the water and is nearly 2 mi
wide. The park also includes numerous plant species and such wildlife as brown
and black bears, mountain goats, whales, seals, and eagles. |
